Abortion Facts and Statistics

One common myth about abortion is that the majority of abortions take place very early in pregnancy and that the embryos and fetuses these abortions terminate are very undeveloped. According to the Center for Disease Control cited in the MMWR, Nov.29, 2002 vol51 No55-9:

58% of all abortions take place in the first 8 weeks
42% at nine weeks or later.

Of these

16% less than or equal to 6 weeks
17% 7 weeks
21% eight weeks
64% Beyond 9 weeks
The remaining 4% may have been lost in estimating the numbers or may be a margin of error.
